Indifferent Attitude Toward God’s Word

Hearing the Word of God being taught or preached by God’s servants is beneficial especially in the long run. It increases our faith, sanctifies us and leads us in the way of truth. The Lord Jesus said in Luke 8:18, Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. (KJV) We must be careful when hearing God’s Word lest we miss important instructions on how to live a victorious and God-glorifying life.
Being aware of the devil’s craftiness in stealing the Word of God from man’s heart will trigger us to be more watchful and careful while hearing the spoken words. In Luke 8:12, it is written, Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. (KJV) We must guard our hearts from the attack of the adversary through fervent prayer and willingness to be led by the Holy Ghost.
A careful study of the ministry of Ezekiel during the Babylonian captivity will show us a glimpse on how unbelieving people responded toward his preaching. In Ezekiel 33:7, it is written, So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. (KJV) God’s warning are life-preserving especially during critical moments.
(I) Unfriendly Spirit Toward God’s Servants Ezekiel 33:30
Hearing the Word of God cannot be likened to hearing man’s earthly teachings with enticing words that appeal to man’s fleshly heart. Hearing the Word of Truth may not always be comfortable because of its power to convict sinners to keep right with God. It could hurt the carnal heart, but it could heal spiritual diseases. Ultimately, the Word of God is so pleasant to a truth-seeking soul.
We must be careful not to be led by unfriendly spirit toward the servants of God. In Ezekiel 33:30, it is written, Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD. (KJV) Inquisitiveness to the Word of God without high respect to it is another way of rejecting the way of truth.
-With hypocritical love Ezekiel 33:31
Love-coated hypocrisy will not last long because it is not from a pure heart. The Bible says in Ezekiel 33:31, And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. (KJV) Flowery spoken words of love from a covetous heart is deceitful and dangerous.
Entertainment seekers Ezekiel 33:32
Preachers of the Word should not be entertainers, but heralds of the True and Living God. Take note of what Ezekiel 33:32 says, And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. (KJV) The Word of God must be received heartily as spiritual food for the nourishment of one’s spiritual being.
Hearers but not doer of the Word Ezekiel 33:32
True preachers of the Word are not entertaining clowns being manipulated by carnal people, but they are fearless servants of God spreading the Gospel of Christ without compromising with the world system. Ezekiel 33:32 says, And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. (KJV) Hearers of the Word who are not applying its godly principles are deceiving themselves unaware. (See James 1:22-25)
Not acquainted with true servants of God Ezekiel 33:33
During the Old Testament time, many servants of God were not truly recognized by the people of Israel. They were ridiculed, smitten, humiliated, and even put to death because they preached against sin in their midst. Like Ezekiel, they were not revered, and their mockers failed to realize that their visible presence was a blessing to them. Many prophets during the Bible times were mocked and belittled, and were not appreciated because of their stand for the truth.
In our times, many believers know so little about their spiritual leaders who they really are because of spiritual gap and disinterest to know them well. In Ezekiel 33:33, it is written, And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them. (KJV) In spiritual sense, Ezekiel was not a well-loved prophet during his time and his godly testimony was taken lightly. In short, they did not know and recognize him as a channel of truth and blessings to them.
Spiritual insights to live by:
In this troubled world, many godly men and women were not appreciated or recognized as they ought to when they were still alive; but when are gone or after death, people will come to realize their preciousness and worthiness as true servants of the Living God. They were overlooked and taken for granted, but their hope-giving presence had been with them during their darkest night to free them from the slavery of sin.
In Ezekiel 33:33, it is written, And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them. (KJV) May the eyes of understanding of people be opened so they may realize the blessing of having true servants of God in their midst for them to hear and follow in the path of righteousness.
Take note of what King Jehoshaphat said in II Chronicles 20:20, And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. (KJV) The visible presence of God’s servants in our midst is indeed a blessing to us all. Praise God for their sanctified lives.
